Syr gave Bea a tour of the Tokyo she knew and loved – both of them relaxing in the back of that sleek electric car in a model and brand Bea didn’t recognise with the uniformed driver silently taking them wherever Syr directed.

She showed Bea the tiny apartment building in ‘Baba where she’d lived when she’d first arrived in the city, and pointed out bars and izakaya she used to frequent with a nostalgic smile. The tour quickly morphed into a kind of architectural appreciation lesson. Syr pointed out traditional Edo-era buildings, explained the link between pre- and post-war styles, dragged Bea from the car to admire modern constructions and projects by studios she respected.

Her enthusiasm was catching, her knowledge of art and philosophy was impressive, and Bea watched her fall into her subject, her passion on her sleeve. It was the ambition of good design to move people emotionally, Syr told her, her eyes glowing, glad when she saw her zeal reflected in Bea’s gaze.

“A good design both transcends its immediate environment and connects to it in a way that makes the people who inhabit it feel as if it was always meant to be there – so right that it couldn’t be any other way. And the spaces between should be magical,” she explained. There was a sudden vulnerability about her that made Bea’s heart double in size. This Syr, with her gentle enthusiasm and quiet excitement, was just as compelling as the masterful woman Bea was already drunk on.

She tugged at Bea’s wrist with a secret smile and drew her through a garden that surrounded a museum. The garden spiralled upwards, past ponds and perfectly placed trees and entered the foyer of the building from a terrace that connected to its fourth floor. From there, rounding an elegant curve in the wall of the building, was a view that encompassed the sprawling grounds of one of Tokyo’s grander parks, with the palace of the Emperor in the distance and the towers of the city as a backdrop. It was breathtaking.

Syr watched Bea with an uncharacteristically hesitant look.

“Did you design this?” Bea asked, though she already knew.

The cockiness was back in the tilt of Syr’s chin in an instant.

“Won an award for it, babe.”

“I can see why. I love it.”

Syr kissed her. Deeply, possessively, right there, without a care in the world for whoever might be watching. That was fair. Her pride was intoxicating.

“You know I haven’t even seen your design for the project you’re pitching,” Bea said – and Syr was mortified.

“I am doing this all wrong,” she muttered, angry at herself, as she led Bea back to the car.

“No, you’re not. I understand that your work takes priority,” Bea said, but Syr hushed her with another kiss that was strangely gentle, even if Bea could still taste the worry and the distraction that lingered underneath it.
